International Women’s Day- Renowned Leaders Female Cancer Surgeons Message on Cancer Awareness

Asian Head Neck Cancer Foundation brings women leaders who have done excellent work in field on Head neck cancer surgery. This is also to increase the receptiveness of general public to accept the female Cancer surgeons in terms of competitiveness and outcome of treatment.

There are less than 5% of cancer female surgeons who have contributed in field of oncology. We would like to highlight these womens on occasion of international women day to spread the message of cancer awareness.

Oncologist Surgeon – Former HOD and Prof Civil Cancer Hospital Ahmedabad

Shakuntala Shah graduated from Government Medical College Surat. She was University first and Seven Medals to her credit. Then she persuaded her masters in Surgery from B.J. Medical College Ahmedabad. She held various positions at The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute, Ahmedabad, one of the premier cancer institute of India and UICC affiliate institute. She retired as Professor and Head of Surgical Oncology services in October 2013. Currently she is associated as Head of Surgical Oncology, Apollo CBCC, Ahmedabad. She has very vast clinical experience of various oncological procedures. She pioneered blue dye technique in sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer in Gujarat.

And Dr. Preeti Jain is a highly trained and highly acclaimed surgical oncologist with 14 years of experience and standing in surgical oncology. She is one of the rare Surgical Oncologists in the country who after developing expertise in cancer extirpative and routine reconstructive surgery, also mastered skills in micro-vascular free flap reconstructions for cancer resections. Presently Dr. Preeti Jain is heading the department of Surgical Oncology at Mahavir Cancer Sansthan Patna. Mahavir Cancer Sansthan is a tertiary care cancer center, largest comprehensive cancer center in east India with 350 beds.

I am associated with Shubham Hospital, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad & Pramukh Swami Medical College, Karamsad. I regularly visit Lions Hospital, Palanpur. But I joined the Surgical Oncology Department in the year 2004 at Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI), M.P.Shah Cancer Hospital, Ahmedabad. I have been in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Asian Institute of Oncology (AIO), SL for about 1 year also worked as an Associate Consultant at Raheja Hospital, Mahim, Mumbai and various departments such as Breast Cancer Services, GI Cancer Services and Gynec Cancer Services for a year at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital. I had published about 13 national and international papers in several journals and presented papers at various respected conferences.

Dr. Purvi Patel is a surgeon who has particular expertise in the multidisciplinary treatment of tumors located in the head and neck area. She has special expertise in surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumours of mouth, throat (Pharynx), voice box (larynx), thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands, sinuses and skin cancer of head neck area. And she is also expert in speech and swallowing rehabilitation.

She has received her specialty training from Head & Neck Services of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York and Department of Surgical Oncology, Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute, Ahmedabad. She is a fellow of International Federation of Head & Neck Oncology (IFHNOS). And she has also received trainings from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, Kerala.

At Aastha Oncology Associates and HCG Cancer Centre, Ahmedabad, she is an integral member of a team of professionals that strives to provide patients with top-quality cancer care, while also placing an emphasis on maintaining or enhancing quality of life
Dr. Purvi has a strong research interest in head and neck cancer. She has attended well recognized ECCO-AACR-EORTC-ESMO workshop on methods in clinical cancer research at Flims, Switzerland in 2015.

She has contributed in many scientific articles published in national & international journals. As part of her personal commitment to society, she has written many chapters in cancer awareness book “Tame Ekla Nathi”.
