Carl Cook knew what he wanted to become before he was even a decade old. He began training to be a professional equestrian when he was 8. His trainers were professional trainers such as Lu Thomas and Graeme. He was competing in various small competitions while still on training and road to being a professional.

The road to being a professional was not smooth on his side. He was defeated in 2008 at the time of the Olympic selection trials. He acknowledged late he was not yet a professional, but he was resistant to going back to school for more coaching. He even left his trainers and went ahead, joining a French professional, Eric Navet, who was once an Olympic athlete. He moved to Normandy in France in 2012, where he met another athlete, Philippe Benoit, and worked with him. Through these professionals, he cultivated his skills and grew his experience in horse riding.
