Dr. Gaurav Gupta shares his views on saving lives through Liver and Kidney Transplant Surgeries

Further, he shares a patient story of a 56-year-old lady. Whom he performed a combined Liver and Kidney Transplant as she was suffering from multiple health complications. Apart from liver failure, she was on dialysis for the past 6 years. He states that it is very challenging to perform simultaneous Liver and Kidney Transplant surgeries. As the kidney is not functioning properly, it becomes a challenge to maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance. While bleeding in the patients can make it even tougher. Dr. Gupta performed the liver transplant first and then performed the kidney transplant. The entire transplant surgery lasted 8 to 10 hours. Fortunately, it was a successful surgery and the patient was discharged on the eight day after the surgery.

Dr.Gupta also performs pancreas transplants, pediatric liver transplants, complex hepatobiliary surgeries on patients suffering from gallbladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, and even liver cancer. Over the years, he has performed liver transplants for Acute Liver Failure (ALF), Acute on Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF) patients.

While sharing his observations, he states that most of his patients affected by liver failure. Because of NASH – Nonalcoholic steato hepatitis, which is a lifestyle disorder. This disorder relates to the existence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and thyroid dysfunctioning.

However, this type of surgery is complete for patients with liver failure only. He advises people to take care of their liver by having fibre rich balanced diets, exercise in moderation. And consuming alcohol in limited quantities.
